An interesting discussion.

During the last week I have had several opportunities to discuss nutrition with my older son. In the course of our discussions I realized that we have done a pretty good job of raising him to not be biased. He really was not aware of what being "fat" or overweight really meant and I had to explain it to him. As we talked I realize that as parents we make it a point not to speak badly about people and that he likely has never heard these terms to describe someone. He knows that I had at times used weight loss products but he never equated them to my being overweight. His world sees all body shapes as being a good and normal thing which is very nice. On the other hand it makes it hard to get the point across that eating for the sake of eating is not a good thing and that being overweight has impacts on your ability to enjoy life. This will clearly have to be an ongoing and gentle dialogue we have for some time into the future.
