Probably a no brainer, but I use address labels to label my child's school supplies. You can get them really cheap. I know it'd probably be much more simple to cover a book with a brown paper bag and then write on it, but I reuse canvas bags. Anyway, address labels are great for labeling items!
I am a huge coupon user. Over the years I have tried many different systems to organize my coupons in an efficient manner. For the last five years I have used a 3 ring binder that has clear baseball card sheets in them. I just put coupons in the card slots. This way you can see every coupon and their dates. I separate them with dividers for things like meats, freezer section, dairy, etc...
