I've heard about water heater blankets and turning the water heater down but I didn't really pay attention until recently.
We put a blanket on our water heater and turned the temp down. We still have enough hot water for three showers in the morning so there's no threat of mutiny.
Hopefully we'll see a difference in the electric bill.
My hubby put a new water saving float in the toilet that lets you set the level in the tank. We're at almost half of what we were with the amount of water per flush and everything's working fine. So hopefully there will be savings in the water bill, too.
Another idea for using less water in the toilet (instead of buying a float) is to fill a plastic container with water (like a small milk jug), cap it, and drop it in the tank. That way when you flush, the water in the jug is taking up continuous space and that much less water will have to refill in the tank.
