Whip topping

For a couple of months I have been trying to make most of our foods from scratch. I have noticed that by keeping a bunch of supplies on hand I can really reduce our grocery bill. My theory is that every time I run into Walmart to pick up milk there always seems to be half a dozen other things that end up in my cart and in turn raise my grocery bill.

This is a method of making whip topping in a pinch in those time when you don't want to run to the store. You can whip evaporated milk. Put the can in the freezer for about an hour (or until ice crystals form). Put the bowl and beaters in the freezer at the same time. When it's time to whip it put milk and 1 teaspoon vanilla in the cold bowl turn the mixer on high and start beating. When it starts to thicken slowly add in powdered sugar (about 1/4 cup; the cornstarch in powdered sugar helps it thicken). You have to use it the same day though or it will get watery.
